Swoyersville native Tara Laskowski to hold book signing at Barnes & Noble on Oct. 12

Acclaimed short story writer and Swoyersville native Tara Laskowski delivers an unforgettable debut novel with “One Night Gone.” Laskowski will conduct a presentation and book signing at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12 at Barnes & Noble Booksellers, Arena Hub Plaza, Wilkes-Barre. After spending a Thanksgiving at the beach with her family, Laskowski couldn’t shake the feeling that, within all the off-season beachy quietness, was a sense that, in the nothing happening, anything at all could happen. “One Night Gone” explores what happens when an outsider with her own unsettled past chips away at the idyllic beach town façade and reveals the sinister secrets buried below. Readers won’t want to miss this suspenseful novel about power, privilege and, ultimately, sisterhood. According to Laskowski, the part electric coming-of-age story and part breathtaking mystery, “One Night Gone” is an atmospheric novel about power, privilege and sisterhood. One sultry summer, Maureen Haddaway arrives in the wealthy town of Opal Beach to start her life anew — to achieve her destiny. There, she finds herself lured by the promise of friendship, love, starry skies and wild parties. But Maureen’s new life ...

EL CAJON — There is a scene in the classic 1941 film, “Citizen Kane” where an exuberant millionaire playboy Kane (Orson Welles) exclaims, “I think it would be fun to run a newspaper.” The context here being that publishing a paper is nothing more than a simple diversion. In local terms, Robert Zakar, who was raised in a family of merchants and has successfully operated gas stations, grocery outlets and convenience stores, decided to take a left turn and delve into — well, for lack of a better term — the body transport business. “When people pass away, we will take the deceased to a hospital or funeral home,” Zakar said. “My brothers would handle the actual transportation, while I would do the marketing and accounting. “At first, I did not want anything to do with removing bodies, it seemed pretty creepy to me; but when I thought about it, I realized that it was about the loved ones left behind,” he said. “I foun...

Congress wants to know why the incoming Interior Chief is keeping his calendar secret

This story was originally published by Mother Jones and is reproduced here as part of the Climate Desk collaboration. The acting head of the Interior Department David Bernhardt says he has to carry a small card around to remind himself of the list of his former clients he should avoid, but the former oil and gas lobbyist insists that he does not need to keep a detailed daily calendar. “I have no legal obligation to personally maintain a calendar,” Bernhardt wrote in a letter to Congress in late February. “Further, no Agency guidance exists recommending that I create or retain one. I have not personally maintained a calendar for years, and I have no intention of suddenly doing so now.” The fight over Bernhardt’s calendars signals one of the bigger controversies ahead in his tenure after his likely confirmation as Interior secretary. Environmentalists have charged Bernhardt, and his predecessor Ryan Zinke, of politicizing Freedom of Information Act responses, omitting calendar entries, and even stretching the boundaries of the Federal Records Act. “It worries me a lot that that’s not being followed,” House Natural Resources Chair Raúl Grijalva (a Democrat from Arizona) tells Moth...

To save money or grow varieties that are not always available at the nursery or garden center. There’s also the process of improving a variety by selective seed saving. Best of all, one can have an ample supply to share with friends, neighbors or the local seed library. First is selection of suitable plants and suitable pollination methods. The next step is to harvest for seed at the right time to produce viable seed. Then seeds will need to be cleaned and dried. The final step is to properly store seeds until ready to plant. Timing is essential. Usable seed only comes from fruits or vegetables that are fully ripened. Most of what we harvest to eat is far from ripe; if it were fully ripened, we would not be able to chew the seeds in things such as summer squash and cucumbers. I like to begin seed saving late in the summer as plants will slow down or stop production if not picked regularl...

Ikea pet furniture line, Lurvig, expands with new products

Two years ago, Ikea launched Lurvig, its first line of goods specifically designed for its human customers’ furry friends. The products were aesthetically minded takes on pet necessities: foldout dog beds, cozy cat houses, and a since recalled self-dispensing water bowl. Now, Ikea is back with a new set of designs to expand the Lurvig line. Working with veterinarian Dr. Barbara Schäfer, Ikea’s designers studied how animals (namely, dogs and cats) live inside our homes. “The biggest challenge is not to humanize pet products,” Schäfer explains. “It’s really important to use animals’ natural needs and behaviors—like how they sleep, eat, or play—as starting points. Then we can design a product that fits in with our ‘human needs,’ such as style and form.” Cats, to no one’s surprise, like their own space and cozy up into soft textiles and enclosed environments. “Dogs, on the other hand, don’t care so much, as long as they have a space close to their owner,” Schäfer says. The expanded Lurvig line will include an update to the cozy cat cube that slots into the square shelving of Ikea’s Kallax system. There’s also a patterned pet carrier, portable water bowl, a pet-sized version of the K...
