The apps, books, movies, music, TV shows, and art are inspiring our some of the most creative people in business this month An award-winning team of journalists, designers, and videographers who tell brand stories through Fast Company’s distinctive lens The chair is a stunner. It’s a deep emerald green, with luxurious swirls of marble. Despite its modernist lines and plastic body, it looks opulent. [Photo: Bjørnar Øvrebø/courtesy Snøhetta]This is the S-1500 chair, developed by the architecture and design firm Snøhetta for the furniture producer Nordic Comfort Products (NCP). Its development can be traced back two full years ago–well before the world freaked out about plastic straws–as Snøhetta opened a small lab in Norway to experiment with recycled plastic as a building material. The lab wasn’t much more than a plastic grinder and injection molding machine, but Snøhetta architect Stian Ekkernes Rossi wanted to reconsider discarded plastic as something more precious rather than disposable–to understand its strengths and weaknesses. NCP got wind of the work after reading one of Rossi’s articles on his research, and hired Snøhetta to redesign one of its most successful chair...

How Two Kentucky Farmers Became Kings Of Croquet, The Sport That Never Wanted Them

On a sunny September Sunday in 1982, Mark Burchfield, a 20-year-old tobacco farmer from rural Kentucky, stood in Manhattan’s Central Park, getting ready to take the most important croquet shot of his life. Mark and his father Archie were one of 32 teams competing in the doubles tournament at the sixth annual U.S. Croquet Association National Championship. Archie already had seven state croquet titles under his belt, but this was Mark’s first tournament. He hadn’t even seen croquet played on grass until the month before; his father’s first time was in March. Back in Kentucky they played a different version of the game on hard-packed clay. Spectators crowded the waist-high chain-link fence that ringed the courts. Over five days of competition, word had spread of the “Kentucky Riflemen,” with their down-home accents and astonishing skills. Everything about them stuck out: Archie’s burly farmer physique, Mark’s fuzzy mustache and shaggy haircut, their homemade mallets with handles made from pool cues. They were black swans among the white-clad East Coast croquet elite, who had welcomed them, as well as Archie’s wife, Betty, with decidedly muted enthusiasm. But here they were, in the...

One evening in late-nineties Boston, enjoying a little after-work jaywalking between idling cars, I noticed, with a jolt, an S.U.V. creeping toward me. I looked up at the car to see Ric Ocasek behind its wheel. Paulina Porizkova, his wife and a supermodel of otherworldly beauty, was beside him. My alarm turned to delight: I’d marvelled at Ocasek’s mysterious pop magic all my life, and at Ocasek and Porizkova’s mysterious coupledom since the eighties. I also understood that Ocasek wouldn’t run me over. You never questioned Ocasek’s competence and control—especially, one imagined, in a car. Ocasek, who died on Sunday, at seventy-five, wrote, sang, and played rhythm guitar on an amazing number of great songs with the Cars, the band he co-founded in 1976. (He also produced albums by Bad Brains, Suicide, Weezer, and others.) Ocasek and his bandmate Benjamin Orr met in the sixties, in Ohio, and moved to Boston in the seventies, where they formed the Cars, with Elliot Easton, Greg Hawkes, and David Robinson, and soon earned a devoted following in bars like the Rathskeller. “Just What I Needed,” with vocals by Orr, got the band signed to Elektra. “I don’t mind you comin’ here / and wast...

Types of Pliers and Their Uses: Training the Apprentice

If ever there seemed to be a catch-all phrase in the world of hand tools, “pliers” might fit that bill. When you need to grip, position, twist, cut, tighten or loosen various things, pliers can cover a pretty broad range of applications. Their general design consists of two handles, a pivot, and a head. Consequently, many different types of pliers are tailor-made for particular applications. Although plier variations are near-endless, today we’ll take a look at 5 broad types of pliers and the jobs they perform in this edition of Training the Apprentice. SUPPORT OUR ADVERTISERSgoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-1389975325257-0′); }); This tool gets its name from, you guessed it, its slip joint. Rather than pivoting from a fixed rivet, these types of pliers feature an adjustable pivot point that allows the two pieces of the plier to shift, extending the range of the jaws. Slip joint pliers can grip materials of varying thickness. The jaws of the slip joint will generally consist of two parts. At the mouth, the jaws have a flat, serrated texture to help with gripping flat surfaces. Behind those, the jaws typically curve out to grip rounded sur...

Sri Lanka scientists stand by naming of new geckos amid nationalist criticism

COLOMBO — Scientists in Sri Lanka continue to voice their support of a colleague under fire from nationalist figures for naming six newly discovered gecko species after a series of historical national heroes. Sameera Suranjan Karunarathne was the lead researcher of a 10-person team that discovered the new species of day geckos during a survey of reptiles in more than 100 locations across Sri Lanka in 2017. Their findings were published in the journal Vertebrate Zoology this August, but the naming of the new species, intended to honor figures from the country’s mythical past and its struggle against colonialism, has sparked nationalist outrage during an election year. “The idea was not to create a controversy but to highlight Sri Lanka’s reptilian diversity and high endemism,” Karunarathne told Mongabay. Two of the new geckos, Cnemaspis nandimithrai and C. gotaimbarai, are named after Nandimithra and Gotaimbara, two legendary fighters from the Ten Giant Warriors who served the ancient Sinhala king Dutugamunu, the island’s ruler from 161 to 137 B.C.E. The four others are named in honor of lesser-known heroes from the Uwa-Wellassa Rebellion of 1817-1818, when Sri Lankans rose up ag...

As a member of a cannabis supply company Oakland Consulting and Packaging Solutions alongside Murray Ruel, Theobald became literally invested in high-quality cartridges. One problem he identified in the industry was that even high-quality distillate cartridges could be sabotaged by a cheap vape battery—especially the now-ubiquitous 510 stick batteries....

‘I just think it has an amazingly seductive glow – it lures people in,” says Gigi

‘I just think it has an amazingly seductive glow – it lures people in,” says Gigi Foyle of the reprise of neon. Gigi, is the Irish-born, London-based creative director and founder of LED neon light company bag&bones (bagandbones.co.uk). She runs the business with her Dublin-based sister Cavanagh. While neon has never really gone out of style – it’s just too cool – of late it’s had a surge in popularity as we re-embrace all things retro and Americana. Google Trends data shows an uptick for the search term ‘neon’ in Ireland in the past 12 months as we clamber aboard the bright bandwagon. Art and illumination in one, neon was traditionally used for advertising, and snapping up a vintage piece is a goal for many of us – because until recently, commissioning your own neon has been an expensive business. Neon signage involves bending glass over flame to create shapes or letters, sucking out air, pumping in gas and attaching electrical transformers. Beautiful and authentic for sure – but highly specialist and ‘ching-ching’, too. Now though, the tech has moved on, allowing the same effect for a lot less ca...
